Got a chance to see one of these nicely made 4-shot, .357 Mag derringers at the recent Reno gun show.

Quite a nicely made piece...wish I could buy one in CA-State...

OUCH to the forth power! A 357 coming out of that. I guess if you actually had to fire it in self defense you probably wouldn't even feel it. Don't look like a range gun though.

Pete, I had a friend who bought one of these when they first came out. It killed and crippled.
Killed at one end, crippled at the other. And about the only way you could hit anything with it, was if you were inside shooting out. A good belly gun, but not much else.

I think I would much rather have a small double-stack .380 ACP like a Beretta or even a Walther PPK/S that I could control than this knucklebuster...

.357 out of what looks like a 1 inch tube seems like it would punish the shooter with singed eyebrows...

OVERKILL IMHO... just a novelty...

Pete,

After you left the show another one of these popped up on a table Saturday in mint condition. The seller was only asking $425, no box or instructions. I thought of you and the higher priced one you pointed out on Friday. I did not need this COP as I had my new bright nickel Luger that I got for less! Nice to have met you in person.

Hi Pete had one of these. After shooting half box of ammo I could not wait to get rid of it. One of the worst weapons I have ever shot. Took me awhile to sell. No one wanted it. finally got rid of it about 2 years ago for 200.00 Was about ready to throw the damn thing in the river. IMHO stay as far away as possible from one.

I did wonder how one would hold this palm-cannon with only 2 fingers wrapped around the grip strap.

They do seem nicely made...not as crude as the AMT Back-ups I own...

I am curious...did you buy that nice nickle-plated luger (1920's alphabet-soup Commercial) with the new shoulder holster ? I think $ 400-450 was a decent asking price...it was one of the nicest nickel plate jobs I have seen...I even cussed myself out for not picking it up as a shooter before I left the Reno show...

Hi Pete,

Yes I did pick up that 1920 nickle plated DWM Luger. At first I really was not interested, but then much later on Friday as I was walking down the aisle in that area it called out and said "buy me". I went over to look down the bore to make sure that it could at least be a good shooter as we all know it has no collector value. As I was looking at the bore the seller said "if you have a use for it you can have it for $400". At the time of purchase the bore looked to be about - good. After I got it home and cleaned it up the bore rates a solid - very good +. All of the numbers match, even the firing pin is numbered. I have had it out shooting and it fires magazine after magazine without any malfunctions. I am happy with this purchase as it has turned out to be a good shooter without any additional work or parts. Thanks for pointing out this nice little Luger and for sharing your knowledge of Luger collecting with me.

I had an excellent time at the show and meeting so many nice LF people just made it all the better. I wish my local gun shows were half as good. I'm looking forward to the next Reno Show.

Pete, watch the AMT backup. I had one of these, carried it for years and shot it very seldom after the first month or so. All the springs in the gun went to pot and it wouldn't fire after about 5 years. My first indication was that the magazine wouldn't stay in the gun. Piece of junk, get the 4 barrel .357 and load it with .38 special wadcutters. I carry a 9 mm S&W 3914 or, for dress, .380 Colt lightweight Mustang.

If you are interested in small cannons, I recommend the American Derringer M-1, out of Waco TX. I purchased a stainless about about 10 -12 years ago. Ordered a set of stag grips. Looks good and shoots two huge hunks of lead. I can't hit a soup can at ten yards, however, I can hit a large V-8 can. I bought it only after I test fired it. 44 Rem. Mag. It has several hundred rounds through it. It does not have the horrible recoil and it looks like the Remington Gamblers Derringer. It is about 1/4 larger than a pack of cig. and has the power of a 44 mag Bull Dog revolver. Two shots.

The Mustang holds 6+1 rounds, shoots 8" centered groups at 50 ft, weighs 10 oz, and is generally satisfactory, but admittedly on the light side. Again, probably OK for Sunday dress up affairs. The S&W 9 mm is easily carried but my .44 Mag is the choice gator gun and P-14 .45 would be the best choice if gunfire is heard leaving the house.
