I have been conducting some research attempting to identify my grandfatherâ??s regiment or division unit number. He served in the German Imperial Army from 1916 to the end of the war 1918.
We know that he was in Northern France and assigned to a Heavy Artillery unit. He would have been (recruited) from the 10th Amy Corp District as he lived in Scheernhorn , Germany in area known as Niedersachsen. I understand that all of the Heavy Artillery units were made up of men from different Corps districts instead of men from the same area as most units were formed. There is a lot of documentation on various Field Artillery units, however I can find very little on the Heavy Artillery units. My Grandfather didnâ??t talk a lot about his military service because of the bad memories that haunted him. In fact when returning to Germany post WWII for a visit to family, he refused to disembark in France for a few hours, stating that â??he had too many bad things happened there to returnâ? If anyone has any information, or a source of information about the Heavy Artillery units, I would be most grateful and I certainly would be willing to share any historical info on the general research I have collected thus far Thanks, Jim javascript:void(0) Frown
