Magazine Question for GT

Since GT doesnt have a Magazine section yet (I do think it is a good idea to have one) I was wondering if he has a die to pass or tap through the mag bodies that will remove dents, etc. Also would this adjust back to spec the alignment of the mag lips? I saw a mag tool like this in a book somewhere. Seems like you could revamp a messed up mag with one! Thanks guys! [img]confused.gif[/img]

Ted i had one made. it works great on sheet metal mags. i use sizing oil from my realoading bench and a brass hammer and they come out realy nice.

Hi Ted! Actually, I do have a replica of that tool! And it works pretty well for minor dents and such, but.....there is no way to reform the shell back to it's original dimension with out a complete finishing/sizing die, much like the same principle as used in reloading! till...later...G.T.

Hi Bill! Glad you made the jump! The mandrel that is used for inside work is the same as is used in an armorer's kit! A similer inside mandrel would be used along with dies ,top & bottom, or, side to side, to press the sheetmetal into it's final shape, I have never seen a set before, but I understand the principle used to form the tube....It is all speculation by me though....no proof.... <img src="graemlins/jumper.gif" border="0" alt="[jumper]" /> till...later...G.T.

Well, since I have a (dubious) collection of bent WWI mag tubes I am constantly thinking of a way to get them back into smooth functionality. I have some really beautiful mag bottoms for them (hmmm..) and a nice internally correct die set would be interesting to at least see (might be a too much to own, though.

So Russ, GT, the die goes through the magazine and pushes out and reams it to a smoother body?

this one goes inside from the lower end and takes dents out that are dented in.

Hi Ed, You have to insert the mandrel into the mag. and tap on the dent/shell, with a nylon, plastic, or possibly a brass hammer, sometimes I even use a small steel ballpeen hammer.....It is actually amazing how the dents come out ....sometimes..., you can make quite an improvement in a mag. by tapping out the dents...till...later...G.T. <img src="graemlins/jumper.gif" border="0" alt="[jumper]" />

FYI Russ,

Russ, Thanks for posting the picture of the mandrel you had made. I have passed on dented mags in the past (reasonably priced) because of the dents. I think this would be great asset to anyone who might have a lot of early Lugers in their collection. Every once in awhile I get the urge to beat on some dented steel and a tool like that would be ideal. Can you either post or pm me on the details of how/who made the tool. Was it here in the NW? Thanks.
