Grips on Mauser Parabellum

A few weeks ago I bought a Mauser Parabellum with 6" barrel and Swiss style straight grips with grip/safety.
This gun is a real sweetheart and shoots on the money with WWB. The thing is, the checkering is sharp and after about 5 or 6 shots it is starting to bite somewhat. I have been retired now for 3 years and my hands have become somewhat "soft" and more sensitive.
Years ago I had a Walther PP in .22 that I used to shoot a lot and it had the same problem. Back then, I took a knife from a place setting and rolled it over the diamonds on the checkering and then sprayed it with True-Oil. this worked very well and made the grips somewhat soft and more comfortable to shoot. Would it be "kosher" to do this to the sticks on my Parabellum? Thanks,...................Ray

Send them to Hugh Clark, our resident grip meister. He can reshape and rechecker the grips. The originals are usually too thick.

Rather than alter the grips that came with your Luger, why not get a set of aftermarket replacements and take the edge off them?

Hugh redid my grips! Like you, I found them to be a sharp trapezoid form. Hugh rounded them into more of the DWM grip profile. Much better,

Because it is impossible to find replacement grips for the 1970's Mauser Lugers!

The grips that came on these guns were too thick and checkered 18 LPI. I have small hands & to me they are painful to shoot.

For $75, I will sand off the coarse checkering, thin & contour the grips & rechecker 20 LPI. This makes the gun much easier to handle. For $100, I will apply a "Swiss Border" pattern.

However at present, I have a backlog of grip work due to my wife's recent illness and deer hunting season opening this past weekend. Turnaround for grips sent now will be approximately 6 weeks.

Note also that the bottom of the grips at the grip screw area is shaped with straight cuts rather than the curved shape of early Lugers. That is why you can't use replacement grips, they aren't interchangeable.

Marc, As you can see in the photos above, Hugh does great work, but if you decide to keep your Swiss modle Parabellum wood grips, as original, there IS a less expensive alternative. With some minor fitting, the new repro black plastic M29 Swiss grips will fit and are not rough on the hands. I have these available @$35 + $6 S&H. I also have one light used set of original Mauser Swiss Parabellum wood grips @$75 + S&H. TH

As owner of the pair of Mausers shown above, I have to say that Hugh's work is simply great!!!! The quality of his work is amazing. His re-shaping and checkering of the grips completely changed the way the pistols feel in the hand, from blocky and uncomfortable to that great traditional luger feel....
