Default New user, Grandfather's Luger, plated

So my grandparents on my father's side are getting quite old and just recently moved into assisted living. As such they are passing things down to their children, including his Luger. I don't know much about it because this is the first I have heard of it, and unfortunately my grandpa isn't in much of a condition to relay a good story. Only documentation we have is the US govt. paperwork approving that he bring it back to the states.

My dad is holding on to it for now until they decide who gets it. Sounds like it is going to be a random drawing, which drives me nuts, but I guess it is the most fair. The sons did set some good rules though, like it can never be sold, must always remain in the family, and always with a son so that it can be passed along with our last name. Of course I want my dad to get it so someday I might own it, but like I said, random drawing, which gives us a 1/4 chance.

So some pics:

He also had a (I think) Kar 98:

I quickly learned here about how these peices got to be nickel plated and I know it killed the collector's value, but that doesn't mean anything to me. It is a family treasure, and I hope to someday own it, even if I have to buy it off a cousin some day down the road.

Looks like the Luger is a M1906 Navy that, unfortunately, got plated. That one had real collector's value, but should still mean a lot to you being a "family" pass-down.

Magazine looks to be a police mag. from the late 1920'-30's era.

If I were the lucky one to win the drawing. I would look into having this fine Navy restored. It would cost a bit- but well worth it given the nature of the pistol and the family history.

pipeman, I understand that, but I have mixed feelings... It has been in the family, like this for many years, and was handed down as a heirloom.

I did think the sexist part of the only sons may pass it along is wrong. My wife has a stronger sense of history of her dads guns than her brother and her sister who is a cop. And she was first born... Further, anyone who studies genealogy knows that a name is passed, but obviously both sides of the family is just as important... From my mothers side, I am a Sons of Union Veteran member and a revolutionary war decendent. From my dads side, well, we don't know yet

Pete - I don't recall any other markings on the firearm other than the ones I have pics off, but I can have my dad take another look. What/where is the frame's grip strap?

Should I end up with it someday, I don't think I would have it restored. Plated is how he says he got it and I wouldn't want to change that.

I understand where you're comming from Edward about it being sexist. It should be available to anyone who knows its value to the family and would be able to appreciate it and pass down the history to the future generations.
