My uncle captured a German officer in Italy during WWII and kept his Luger, holster and other personal effects. He cannot remember the rank of the officer. Please comment on what markings I should look for. Were officers guns marked differently from standard issue.

yes, come into the main page, http://www.lugerforum.com/, go to the technical section, then click on the http://www.lugerforum.com/IDsheets.html
Lugers were lugers, and many times a german officer was actually an enlisted, as their uniforms looked different to a US GI. Give us, any markings on the top, serial number with suffix, proofs on the right and anything else. Provide pictures if you can. Welcome to the forum! ed

Welcome
![]() I'm not really into design.. but the Germans sure had some good looking uniforms! Many where probably mistaken for officers. If you're unable to take pictures of the Luger, the short way to learn more about it would be to 1. Check if it's matching in numbers, 2. Check the maker on top of the toggle 3. Find out if it's a navy, artillery or regular 4". Markings on frame and receiver. Look for sear-, mag-, and grip safety. Import marks. 9mm or 7.65. Reblued ++++ But.. pictures are always great, make things more interesting ![]()
