C96 broom

Guys,

I have a "shooter" Red 9 (gripped) pistol serial number 888195 with c/u proofs all matching, refinished (pitting under some of the blue) , with a mismatched bolt. Is this a real "red 9" or has it been rebored?

It shoots great and I paid $350.00 for it several years ago.... as a "shooter". I don't have any books on these guns, so can one of you guys help me out?

No import marks on this gun and shot 150 rounds through her today ... what a "piss-ah" as we say in the Republic of Massachusetts .... I really need a stock for this gun for shooting it at 100 yards !!! ....

I had to replace the firing pin when I bought it but FUN to shoot! My collection includes the mismatched, refinished, cheap, "fun" stuff for the range.

The safety lever broke during the firing of the gun, another reason not to shoot the guns in your collections! .... How the "f***" does a safety lever break in one of these pistols?

Mark, Oddly enough I have had a safety lever break too! I wondered the same thing..I guess it is a common thing with this type of pistol. Funny as there does not seem to be any great amount of stress on this part. Jerry Burney

Me too, mine broke about a month ago. It never worked very well in the first place.

It seems to me the part is a bit loose and the recoil causes vibrations that breaks off the end?

HI Mark,

The true WW1 9mm Military contract pistols had their own serial range, from 1 to about 135,000. Serial #888195 would actually have belonged to a model 1930, many of which went to Asia in those days and then came back in the 70-90's and were refinished and rebored to 9mm.

Thanks Vince, I suspected as much ..... it sure shoots nice for a rebore .... even has a nice set of repro "Red 9" walnut grips.

I broke the firing pin tip on mine, and didn't even know it until I took it apart months later. It was shooting great with a broken firing pin!

Mine keeps bending the tip of the firing pin. I got a repro and it bent too. I may take it to work and grind it down a bit and see if that fixes the problem.

Mark, I agree with Vince that your broom is a reworked M30 and the safety levers for these (should be marked F&S) are very hard to find. Since they are hardened spring steel, they flex every time the safety if applied and become brittle. To the best of my recollection, the original Red Nice range ran from 1 to 176K and original grips will have the full serial inside both sides. Tom

If you are shooting your brooms, please, please, please replace the locking block with a new one. Having an old one give way will send you to the hospital if not the morgue.

Check with LugerDoc on this forum. He has had them in the past. When I bought my C96 from him, he had replace that part already.

I bought my C/96 from Lugerdoc, too. He left it laying out on purpose just to tempt me... leather is from lugerholsterrepairer, stock is from Len Antaris
