Need Advice

I recently purchased my first two Lugers. I know very little about German military. One of the Lugers has a holster and two matching clips. The last 2 digits of the serial number are stamped on all of the parts, even the firing pin, the exception being the barrel. The only marking on the barrel is a small, hard to read, 8.34. The top of the receiver is dated 1941, and the toggle is stamped with Mauser. The left side of the receiver, above the serial number is a small eagle with the letter N below. The right side has another eagle over a small circle with a swatstika, and a small letter L to the lower right of the eagle. On the front of the trigger guard is a letter which looks like a Y. There is also an eagle on the left side where the toggle bends. The clips are aluminum bottoms with the serial number, the Y, one marked "1" and one marked "3". The clip marked "3" also has an eagle over an X with a small C to the right. That clip is marked with "Hanel Schmeisser Patent" There is an unmarked loading tool. The holster is brown and is stamped on the back "A.FISCHER, BERLINC.2, 1934, and a starburst with the letter L in the center. I believe it is a police holster, the strap comes from the bottom, with no buckel. The condition of the Luger and holster would be 95%. I would like to know what I have and its approximate value. The other Luger is a standard BYF 1941, all matching, no holster, also 95% condition. It has a black plastic clip bottom, no number. Thanks for your help.

Look carefully at the barrel on the top right quadrant, there should be a small eagle over something there. The marking under the barrel should be 8.84, not 34. Check again using a high magnification glass.

Thanks, Herb. I looked at the top of the barrel, and you are right--there is an eagle and the number is 84, not 34. The magnifying glass really helped. I thought I had checked it out very carefully, but I never noticed that eagle before. What else can you tell me about the Luger? It is great there is a website like this to find out helpful information. Is there anything else I should look for on the pistol?

PK, one thing that bothers me is the statement of no serial number on the barrel? Right under the 8.84 should be a serial number. If not, then I am under the impression the barrel has been replaced.

My 3rd Reich book states that 1941 and 1942 dated E/L marked are German Police Lugers. Also that E = Eagle N and L are Police. Further, Police Magazines were issued and numbered 1, 2 or sometimes 3.

Sorry, I have no idea on value, and I am sure some better experts will chime in, but wanted you to know you were being listened to, my gut feeling it is worth a reasonable amount, I am checking on lack of serial number markings for the barrel. [img]smile.gif[/img]

The Eagle/N stamp is a commercial stamp and the Eagle/L as well as the Eagle/C are police inspection/acceptance stamps. It is not clear what the letters stand for but they are police stamps. Police lugers were issued with two or three magazines numbered 1, 2 and 3. Extremely few survive with three--yours has two and that is uncommon. Police lugers often survive with one original magazine. If the parts and finish are original factory or police armory, then the luger has a value somewhere up from $2300 in my opinion. The 1934 Fischer police holster, depending on condition, could add $300 or more. The tool could have an Eagle/letter police stamp but because it does not, probably values at around $45.

Those are my rough guesses.

Hello Ed & PK: FYI

Most Mauser Banners will have an unnumbered barrel. Look at the front of the front sight block, If the barrel is original there will be an eagle or crown/u stamp.

The pictures are great! The banner Luger looks very similar to mine. Any thoughts on why they did not put a serial number on the barrel? I've looked closer and I can't tell what the eagle on the front of the front sight is over. Also, I noticed a bar over the safety on the left side of the receiver. This is not on my other Luger. I am going to try to figure out how to post pictures and, hopefully, I can send actual pictures of both Lugers. Appreciate all of the information!

Early Mauser Banners had a crown/u on the front sight base, after Apr 1940 they had an eagle/n. the eagle is upside down which makes the "n" hard to see. My 1939 Eagle/F has a serial number on the barrel while my 1939 Eagle/L does not. Dont know why but it appears they quit ser # barrels in early 39.
