An ersatz (German pronunciation: [ɛʀˈzats]) good is a substitute good, especially one that is considered inferior to the good it replaces. It has particular connotations of wartime usage.

I would think in the context of a company or battalion or regiment, "ersatz" would be closer to what we would call a "replacement" unit- and not necessarily "inferior".

I have a S9805 bayonet with similar markings note the backward K on the bayonet.
