Default identifying luger

A friend gave me a luger but i have several questions. On the top of the frame is 1913 with the normal DWM makings on the toggle. serial number 9817, with 17 on all small parts. On the left side below the serial number is "Made in Germany". It looks as though it was there from the beginning, how does hat happen?

Welcome to the forum!

You have a pre-World War 1 DWM military Luger that was imported into the United States, probably sometime after that war from stocks that were captured or confiscated. The US government required that all imported arms have the country of origin stamped on them. That's why the "Made in Germany" stamp is only slightly less old than the pistol itself.

www, The "made in xxx" was added to the country of origin by US customs requlations in 1923, so pistol was imported into the USA after that date. TH
