I've seen similarly located holes in other pre 1914 lugers (without stock lug) for centering a non factory type stock that attached to the lanyard loop. TH

One of my '06 AEs has a small tapped hole near the bottom of the back-strap, and it arrived with a knurl-headed screw installed there. An aftermarket or home-made butt-stock setup. I think also, was the inspiration for this tapping and screw.
