No stock and quite a bit of wear on the grips, but I know very little about these.

The hole in the back of the receiver was likely not there to start.

Looking at pic #8 (the closeup of the hole), that is a fairly pitted area...Lanyard loop & frame area around hole...

I've seen similarly located holes in other pre 1914 lugers (without stock lug) for centering a non factory type stock that attached to the lanyard loop. TH

Interesting, Tom. I can see, also, that there are two small horizontal grooves--one on each side--on the back end, just above the lanyard loop. I'd wager that these are the bearing areas against which the stock was tightened. Whether they occurred from simple wear, in interaction with such an apparatus, or were filed in, to locate the stock vertically...? The lanyard loop appears to have short legs in this pic--or, it may simply be foreshortening due to camera angle...

One of my '06 AEs has a small tapped hole near the bottom of the back-strap, and it arrived with a knurl-headed screw installed there. An aftermarket or home-made butt-stock setup. I think also, was the inspiration for this tapping and screw.
