Little known fact about turkeys and their name in English:
When the first North America settlers established themselves they already had domesticated turkeys brought with them from England. They were in fact quite surprised when they heard the call of wild turkeys responding to the ones in captivity. The first Europeans to meet the turkey were the Spaniards, in Mexico, introduced to them by the locals. Apreciative of the fine bird the Spaniards brought them back to Europe and made it known to all European nations. But, no one knew exactly where it came from except for the Spaniards. The traders who took the bird to England from Spain brought commerce from all the Mediterranen area and originated from Turkey (the country). They were known as the Turkey traders and the bird they brought became called the "Turkey bird" turkey for short. Last edited by kurusu; 11-27-2014 at 08:35 AM. |
