They sure did, and Colt has done some improvements to "old slab sides" for the Marines. It is a business looking 1911.

Seriously, you wont ever see a 1911 reinstituted as a service wide handgun. You have to realize the military is no longer seen as a fighting force, but as a test bed for social engineering and "diversity enhancement". Handguns are widely issued to support troops in addition to actual combat soldiers. You'll never be able to train a 100 lb inner city single mother to understand Condition 1 cocked and locked, or deal with the recoil of .45ACP.

I'm sure if he had a chance to squash the whole project, I'm sure our leader in office would find some other way to spend that half a billion. Just my opinion.

Kind of hard to understand from a semi experienced viewpoint.
Handguns spend 99% of the time holstered.
.45 auto is pretty effective for handgun use.

I carried a CAR and a .45 a few times, but soon ditched the .45 as excess baggage.
1911s can be improved with minimal work-a trigger job helps immensly.
A lot of politics was involved in the switch to the Beretta.

I've aways been a huge fan of the 1911 / 45ACP in fact in my life I think I owned quite a few of them (at the moment I've got 7 of them in my safe, and I shoot the Colt GCT or the Wilson CQB almost every week at the range) still without setting off another caliber war, would be safe to say that NO handgun can stop someone by the sheer force of its round regardless of the caliber.
9mm FMJ (not hollow point) probably is not the deadliest caliber ever conceived, but I wouldn’t stand in front of one.

About the USA made M9: after more than twenty years of different people shooting, carrying ,clearing, loading, neglecting, hammering tent pegs and only occasionally cleaning/lubing them, the M9s in service today are surely in a bad shape

All I can say is that since 1990 I've been owning an oldish Beretta 98F and I want to point out that unlike my Glock 21 my 98F NEVER NEVER malfuctioned once.
