I just recently picked up my first Luger. It's a DWM with a serial of 42753.It has no date stamped on it. I was hoping someone might know when it was made.

Marc, Your commerical luger is in the overlap of the M1906 (with grip safety) and M1908 (without) ranges. Normally both would have the verticle crown/N proofing on the left receiver in your range, and no serial number in that location, unless later reworked for the military or police. Tom

for our Rogues Gallery. As a frequent poster you qualify, although I can't say you'll be in good company....

DOK, I'd like to offer some pictures for the Gallery, but i'm afraid that a camera isn't compatible with my "Mickey Mouse" Web TV machine. Also please note, that I'm currently out of Mec-Gar PO8 mags, as you guys cleaned me out. I do still have new triple Ks (perfered by some) @$20 or used original starting @$50.

that must be what he looks like the first time he fired a luger without hearing protection!

Marc,
More info is needed: does the SN have a small letter below it on the front of the frame, what are the markings on the left and right sides of the reciever? |

you will find the markings in the Technical Info section of this site. Using them and the suffix info will be a big help in determining the correct date.

Hi Marc, Tom, -- I thought these 1906's or 1908's had horizontal C/N's, not vertical C/N's? I thought the vertical C/N's started around 1919 and after?

On the left side of the slide or upper receiver (not sure of the correct name)behind the serial there is a crown with a B and a crown with a U turned horizontal. It appears that they were there first and the serial was stamped over them. There are no markings on the right side of the slide. On the front of the receiver beneath the barrel is the whole serial again with no other markings. On the bottom of the barrel it has a crown with an N. Those are all of the markings that I can see. There is no grip safety and the grips are a black/brown plastic which are most likely getting replaced soon. All numbers match including the magazine, except for the safety piece that pops up when in gesichert. From the crown markings it looks to be between 1900 and 1908 from the tech section. Is it possible to get closer on the date? Also approximately how much should I have paid? The blueing is about 90% with a little wear from a holster. It has very little pitting on the sides and none on or in the barrel.

on the left receiver and barrel. On mine the Crown N represents the barrel was replaced by the East Germans, probably in the 1950s, my guess is, so was yours. The proofs on the left side are German Commercial proofs usually applied on weapons during 1900 - 1908, although my Luger is 1918.
