1937 s42

Hello,

Forgive my ignorance.

I have a chance to purchase a S42 1937 Luger with all matching numbers. The magazine matches as well. The serial number is 4 digit, can't remember what it is off hand however there is a "u" that is present after the number. The curious part of this Luger is there is a gouge, for the lack of a better word, that basically runs through the 1937 above the chamber. Condition 85%. I realize I should have pictures for everyone to look at, however, I didnt take any when I looked. What would be a fair price?

The gouge is troubling...Grinder mark???

Is the stock lug still there??? How's the bore??? Overall finish??? Does it look re-blued??? Good grips??? Pitting???

Thanks Postino for the reply, I will try to answer your questions.

The gouge doesnt really look like a grinder mark, but I suppose it could be. It is about 1/16 of an inch wide probably smaller, and is obvious to me whover or whatever did this started at the 7 in 1937 and ended at the 1. It looks to me like a punch was held on an angle and driven through the numbers. The stock lug is there, bore looks good, I would say there is 85% of the original blueing left, grips are nice, not broken or cracked by the screw and there is no pitting.

I sure wish I could get some pics for you but i can't at this point.

If you want an opinion; based on no photos and your description I'd say it's worth $700-$800 because it has a matching mag.

If you can get it for $1000 or less, do it. The gouge takes away some of the collector value, but at that price it's still a good score. If not, it's a buyers market for Lugers right now and a nicer one will be just around the corner.

So I went to the gun shop today to buy the Luger and the owner sold it. I guess I should have gone with my gut the other day and purchased it then. Oh well, the hunt continues.

I have been interested in purchasing a Luger for quite some time. My Great Uncle was with the 644th Tank Destroyer Battalion in WWII. During the war he very often would send items home as my Father remembers opening a few packages from him, he vividly remembers all of his loot was wrapped up in ponchos. I have a beautiful Haenel KK Sport .22 rifle he sent home, an Iron Cross, all of his campaign medals, his Presidential Unit Citation and a cheap copy of his Belgian Fourragère. I have many of his items, however there is one I don't have. My Dad was promised his Luger he brought back with him, however upon my Great Aunts death (Uncle predeceased Aunt) the Luger was no where to be found. I even have my Great Uncles form where he declared the Luger and have its serial number as well. So at any rate, I want to obtain a WWII Luger to sort of remember my Uncle and pay tribute to what he did.

Hi Dave,
welcome to the "club".

What's the serial#? Photos?
If you know your uncle's luger's serial#, why not posting a want-to-buy note in the WTB section if this forum? Maybe it shows up some time.
