1916 Luger

Good evening. New member here. I have a 1916 DWM with holster and non matching mags. Can you guys help me place a value on it. I dont know if it is in good enough shape to put away or if it is a shooter. It seems to be in good shape with a little rust. I need to clean it. Everything seems to match except the mags.

The holster is in good shape except where the stitching is coming undone. It has two dates stamped on it, one on the back of it and one inside the flap. It does have a take down tool that is not marked. I have read on here that the take down tool not being marked is common for this year.

I'll go out on a limb here and say that if it were in front of me now I'd be looking at a fig'gur between $1150 and $1400 depending on closer inspection and whether the internals match. Value certainly depends on if you are buying or selling, and to whom, collecter or retailer. Most gun shops would offer well under $1000 because they have to keep the lights on, etc.
It is definitely a keeper, in need of a bit of cleaning, oiling, holster repair (Jerry Burney, of course) etc. Shoot it if you must, but break a numbered part and "it'll cost you".
I'll be interested to see what the other members chime in at.

The 1914 date on the back of your holster is the manufacturing date, and the 1915 inside is the date that it went into "E.B." (?) inventory. I would certainly clean off any active rust, particularly under the grips, and then keep it well oiled to protect those bare spots. TH

Have your holster repaired only by Jerry Burney (Lugerholsterrepair)... He is the ONLY one in the world I would let touch a collectible holster

... what future generations of Luger enthusiasts will do once he is gone is probably cry....

Your Holster is certainly a collectible! Put no creams or ANYTHING on it... keep it clean with an old shoe buffing brush, but use NO polish on it either.

Don't store the gun in the holster! Maintain holster shape with bubble wrap, and put some folded inside the belt loops to keep them from going flat. Keep the mag pouch with a cheap magazine in it to maintain the shape, or shape a piece of wood to fit it would be even better. Don't use the closure strap, you will wear it out... remember it is almost 100 years old! Just leave the buckle/strap undone. Keep the leather in a cool dry place.

Your Luger and holster will only appreciate in value as time passes. The value estimate is probably low for your rig... I recommend you KEEP it.

Thank all of you for the information. I am going to clean it this weekend. I am scared to pull the grips off. I will look for a video on youtube showing how the best way to do it is. I will post better pictures when it is clean.

Your holster was issued to E.B.=Eisenbahn-Betriebs {Railway Management Regiment} in 1915.

Thanks for all the replies. I have been gone a lot lately and couldnt post on here. I have it all cleaned up and will be posting pics soon. Hopefully, I can get the holster repaired this winter when lugerholsterrepair comes back to Yuma for the winter.
