I used a seperate '3rd party' flash system, when taking pics of guns. I usually put it off to the side about 4 feet away from the gun. So, when my digital camera flash goes off, the other unit detects it, and sends a split-second delayed 2nd-flash. Which, gives a clean shot of the gun. I use the white backgrounds, to blend in with HTML pages. Looks flush and nice.


you can also buy the external flash unit for dirt-cheap (any camera shop). I'll check out the flood-light system too! Very nice pic you posted!

The floolight system is the best way to get the lighting proper. I you want to spend some extra money, the use of photographic umbrellas are the best. They store easy and diffuse the light very well. When I get my new digital camera for Christmas, I will have to get some extra lighting to augment the internal flash which is not the best for stagged photography, it just can't fill-in the entire area like flood do.


I am always amazed at the great photography all you guys post on the Forum; they are great. I hope mine will be close to all your quality.

Forgot to crop the background out. Dropped it from 600k to 180k. Resolution started at 1600 x 1200.

I got tired of getting out lights etc to get decent pictures. I now use the scanner. Sure gets every detail[and defect].

ANybody ever hear of a light box for taking picures, I have been tempted to make one! No back ground clutter and diffused light from all angles. The pictures of firearms on Manions.com are really good and really small, this one is only 13 K. ~Thor~

Lightboxes are the PROFESSIONAL way of photographing objects. All major advertising firms use them, especially for photographing highly reflective surfaces such as jewelry. I have used them, they are wonderful.

You must also be using a tripod, right? Has anybody tried the way the pros photograph guns for the magazines, i.e., placing them on a sheet of glass and illuminating from above and below? P.S.: What is a light box?

AARON, a light box is basically what you describe. The one I saw was a box with holes in it (pegboard) with a piece of transulcent (not clear, so it will break up and diffuse the light)white plastic that has been roughed up so it doesnt reflect light as well. It has two bulbs below the plastic shelf and one above it. It has a hole in the top where you put a camera lens through. You put the gun on the shelf and focus and shoot, not leaving the lights on long as they will quickly heat it up. Also it was told that if the camera has a timer shutter to use it to reduce even the minor vibrations of pushing the button to trigger the shutter. I saw the plans for one in the fourth addition of Gun Collector's Digest the same addition that had "1300 Grams of Rust" the miraculous full restoration of a C96 Mauser Pistol that was basically trash by the Restoration Wizard Gale Morgan. A great issue, I got mine on ebay in an auction. ~Thor~

But you really need the whole issue anyway!! The Article on the Mauser is priceless, then a lot of photographic information in a full article, then an article on importing rare guns, and Luger Literature. Get a used copy on Ebay! That is what I did and it really didnt take me that long! I will email you where you can find a copy for $12.95 ~Thor~

The "Gun Collector's Digest" 4th edition was edited by Joseph Schroeder and he is a member of the Ohio Gun Collectors Association and frequently has a table there. The next show is Dec 15-16. He is also a member of NAPCA but the membership roll does not list an address. He also has a nice article regarding the importing of guns in the book.


I bought my book from him and he had a large stack of them at the time. But maybe time has lessened his enthusiasm for carrying an inventory to gun shows.


There are some great pointers on this thread regarding the photography of our "babies". I am just wondering how I can get it all on a place that I can save. With me, it all started with Thor's close-up pictures of some proof marks. Then it proceeded to the forums Owners' Corner and HÃ?Â¥kans specials. Now I see more and more guys taking pictures on various threads and I believe that this really increases the enjoyment of this forum. Keep it up guys.
