Question on a proof mark

I just bought a code 42 luger, and every number matches and the proof marks are correct on the barrel, but the marks on the reciever look like the proof marks #47(found in the 4th chart of the markins section) only mine has 63 stamped under both of the eagles. Is this normal? I am assuming that it is, but I just wanted to check anyway. Thanks in advance.

Hi Brent...Yes, the 63 marks are perfectly normal. I use for reference Jan Still 3rd Reich Lugers, page 65, which tells of the small 63 under eagle, or large 63 under eagle or a combination of small and large as being as being correct Army Acceptance Stamps for the 42 Code, 1939 Chamber dated Lugers.

There was a very good article about 2 years ago in "Auto-Mag" on the diffences in the large and small E/63 stamps on the 1939 Lugers. I wish I had them with me so I could give you more info. Maybe someone with these can provide more details. The 1939 Luger had this interesting array of different size stamps. I also wish I could remember who wrote the artice.
