Default Is a reblued 1918/1920 DWM worth $1k?

I joined this forum awhile back to try to learn a bit about lugers. All I know is that I don't know much.

I've got a local with a 1918/1920 DWM that has been reblued without regard for straw. It comes with two mags and a holster, all of which I assume are reproductions. The numbers on the frame and barrel do not match.

The front of the handle is stamped 5G.R.z.F.6.12 M.G, which I understand is associated with the original unit it was assigned to (and pretty interesting to me but I don't know how to decipher it yet).

The guy bought it because it's "pretty" but now realizes he paid too much and wants to recoup some of the cost (he's going thru a divorce, too). Anyway, I'd like to know your opinion on what this might be worth. He wanted 1200 and I told him I'd pay 800-1000. He's now ready to accept my 1k offer but I'm wondering if I should take it or push harder for a lower price.

The short answer is no.. I see a reblued, mismatched DWM with two Gun Parts Corp repro mags and a repro holster. THe reblue is not correct and the gun has been buffed too hard.

This is a $600-$700 rig, tops.

I totally agree with the above. $700 would be the very top. For $1000 you can do much better than this. It is in the lower end shooter class. IMHO Bill

These two fellows have given some good advice. I wouldn't pay $400.

Listen to what Bill says..For $1000 you can do much better than this.

For that kind of money why not get something you can be proud of?

I decided to visit Krausewerk Collectibles in San Mateo to do more comparison shopping and found an artillery shooter that fit my desires a bit more. It, too, is mismatched and was reblued at some time in the past. At $1295, what are your thoughts on my choice?

Looks like it has a decent finish, not heavily buffed. Nice added bonus, the stock. For a shooter you will be much better off with this! It gets positive attention at the range too...

Jerry, I'm familiar with this piece as I frequent Mike's shop. You can rest assured that you did very well!

Much better. Your going the right way by asking first. People on this forum will always give you a good answer. One just needs to ask. It would be interesting to know the total years of luger collecting amassed on this forum. Oh the money they could have saved me 50 years ago. Happy collecting and shooting. And welcome to the forum. Bill

Again, thanks for the guidance on the first gun. I knew I did well with the artillery, but I still have to admit I feel better that your opinions align on it as well. I still have 10 days to wait but I'm already thinking that with a little more studying I'll be even better prepared to buy my NEXT Luger!

BTW, they have a Suh-weeet Swedish at the store, but 3k is (currently) out of my price range.

And it begins You did well mate, that's the way it's done, gather information, ask first, and don't buy the first thing that presents itself

I am glad Krausewerk Collectibles in San Mateo worked out for you. I still have to get down there. If I knew they had that type of deal I would been there a long time ago.

Oops, newbie-ness kicking in big time. Yes, Swiss. I'm feeling slightly retarded at the moment.....
