Default byf ejectors

Dear experts

Does anyone know why some ejectors on byf 41 (and perhaps other?) lugers appear to of an almost cordovan color?

Thanks,
Jeff

Hello Jeff,
the color is a result of the metallurgic act of steel-tempering e.g. Straw-Color. If tempering is done at higher temperature the straw-color changes to purple. Steel will be more elastic and less prone to break.
If not done so during manufacture it may have been applied during a refurbishing act.
See attached tempering table.

Hope this answered your question,
Thomas

Hi Jeff,
these are degrees Celsius, however I did some research and I believe, that the colour you described might rather be the result of some blueing or coating technigue. The typical straw-colour is caused by the tempering process.

Some early hot dip Mauser PO8s (1937-39) with have ejectors &/or extractors with a purple color caused by improper temperature bluing. TH
