Dear experts
Does anyone know why some ejectors on byf 41 (and perhaps other?) lugers appear to of an almost cordovan color? Thanks, Jeff |

Hello Jeff,
the color is a result of the metallurgic act of steel-tempering e.g. Straw-Color. If tempering is done at higher temperature the straw-color changes to purple. Steel will be more elastic and less prone to break. If not done so during manufacture it may have been applied during a refurbishing act. See attached tempering table. Hi Jeff,
these are degrees Celsius, however I did some research and I believe, that the colour you described might rather be the result of some blueing or coating technigue. The typical straw-colour is caused by the tempering process. Thomas |

Some early hot dip Mauser PO8s (1937-39) with have ejectors &/or extractors with a purple color caused by improper temperature bluing. TH
