is keeping your luger in a air tight plastic ziplock after cleaning/lub a good idea or is it better to rap it in a clean cotton cloth ? new to gun collecting

Since you live in georgia where the humidity is high, I would leave them unwrapped, and rack them on surfaces that will not tend to be moisture traps...and make a habit of checking their condition on a frequent basis... The shelves of my gunsafe are lined with linoleum or just bare painted metal for just those reasons..

Use of a ziplock may block water droplets from getting on your Luger, but it will also be a source of condensation forming inside the bag from the air you trap in there when you zip it shut. Another issue in my mind would be the concentration of any excess lubricants on the original wood grips... There are those who use food wrappers that suck out all the air like a vacuum before sealing... I have my doubts about those as well cause what will happen if the plastic gets punctured? Won't the vacuum suck in whatever atmosphere exists outside the bag and bring it right in there with your prize Luger?

Cotton rags would also have a tendency to wick moisture out of the air and place it in close proximity to the metal surfaces.

Thank you for your advice. I never thought about the hi humidity here and the cotton rags drawing moisture. the rags are now gone. im going to rack them in my safe as you say. Thanks for your time. lb.

You're welcome... I used to live in Augusta in 1974-75 and speak from experience... Use lube and elbow grease frequently... besides, it isn't an unpleasant pastime for a gunlover.

im in Marietta Ga. your site got me interested in the luger. i had several civil war colts and a few old west colts. a friend who needed some money sold me a gi 1911a1 colt at a good price and i ran up on your site by luck and then i had to have a luger to go with the 45. anyway what a great hobby. dident mean to ramble on. lb.

Ziplock bags are great when taking a pistol (..or some electronic stuff) from cold to hot enviroment. Like from below freezing into a warm car or house. Can let it stay in it for about an hour or so, and by that avoid most of the condensation. But it would be a big no-no for storage.
I have a silica gel thingy made by Remington in my gun safe, when there is a red light, is has to be taken out and dried. At least that's the idea with it.. mine is always giving me the red flag.

For the short term I donÃ¢??t see a problem with zip lock bags but you should know that any dust particles trapped between the plastic and gun will act just like sand paper.
Unless youÃ¢??re in a laboratory environment your gun will have dust on it and you will get scratches even though they will be hard to see.
I have had an occasional problem with bags being incompatible with certain oils causing the release of chlorides that left in contact with your guns finish for a long period will cause galvanic corrosion and severely pit your finish.

I just donÃ¢??t think itÃ¢??s worth the risk!

I really like the idea of storing the guns suspended in air using a dowel in the barrel; I live in a humid, salty area and have never had a problem as long as the guns are coated with good oil.

From the looks of Morgan Kane I always thought you carried a single action Colt every day. Are there any of those around in Norway? There are lots available around here although the genuine Colts are pricy. The Italian copies are pretty reasonable. The old Colts from before 1900 (both cartridge and cap/ball) are very expensive in shootable condition--although it's not wise to shoot them. Are the laws on such guns (100+ years old or cap/ball) any different in Norway from those for modern guns?

Al, in danger of sounding schizophrenic.. both yours truly and Morgan Kane carry their Colt's every now and then

His choice was usually a Police Special in a trimmed holster, while my only Colt is a 1911 produced by Kongsberg shortly before ww2. It has been a childhood dream for me to have one, so I'm always on the search for a decent ORIGINAL Colt here in Norway. But so far no luck.. just those italian or belgian copies come up for sale here, and that don't work for me.
They are not restricted in any way, except that the owner needs to be 18+. My only pre 1870 firearm is a beast of a Montenegrin 11.75mm revolver, I don't even dare to think of firing it
