Default Glueing the red plastic on a Swiss Luger

Howdy

I purchased a 06/29 Swiss Luger with the Red (canevasit plastic) grips.
The pistol itself is in great shape, red grips included. But the Red magazine base has a crack in it, and it shows the signs of having been glued before.

I would like to glue it so that the crack stays closed and not spread some more. I figure either crazy glue or plastic model cement. I was wondering if someone might have glued this canevasit plastic before, what worked, and what did not?

Thanks

Stephen

Default not a good prospect?

Hi Stephen, I'm not sure, but I'm thinking the plastic used for the grips and bottoms was, a Phenolic Thermal Setting Resin, similar to our bakelite... It's a one shot deal, molded with pressure and heat, with excellent strength and dimensional stability...until it gets old... then it breaks like glass and your just screwed.... CA (super glue) will be very marginal, 60 second epoxy is your best shot... and only a 50 / 50 chance it will meet you needs... best bet is to seek a new or different mag, and sometime, when your a bit luckier, replace the one broken with a brown or black bottom till you find a red one... Best to you, til...lat'r....GT

You might ask Doug or Ken at FGS (fgsinc@zoomnet.net) if they have any spare Red Bern magazines for sale. At one time they carried them even if they aren't listed on the web site.

Howdy

Well guys, I got brave today and glued my Red mag base that had the split in it. I used Krazy glue as I needed a liquid that would flow into the crack. I put the nozzle in the widest part of the crack, held the crack as wide open as I dare, squeezed the bottle and prayed that capilliatory action would make the glue go everywhere in the split. Then I squeezed the end together and held it for a couple of minutes. It worked. You can still see a little crack line, but the piece is solid. The mag now looks and feels a whole lot better then it did.
