Default Can someone explain this?

I'm thinking of bying an Erfurt.. but I have never seen this (lever?) over the sideplate before.

Perhaps someone know it's purpose?

Thanks,
I'm a bit confused about it. As there is no spring cut over the grip, and no police markings on the frame..

Steinar, the frame cut (slice) and left grip modification on the upper left corner are for a magazine safety. This pistol has a sear safety!!

Steinar,

Not all of the police lugers were unit marked. The magazine safety was not successful, and was not installed on all pistols. The ones that were installed were later disabled.

The sear safety was installed to prevent accidental discharge when the pistol was being stripped for cleaning, in case a round was left in the chamber.

Thanks for the imput

I recently sold a police Luger, that one had a clear cut above grip and a hole trough the frame. Can't see any cut on this one.. do you guys think it is legit?

Morgan,

You are confusing two different type of police safetys. The one you picture is a SEAR safety. The kind with the hole in the frame and the lever behind the trigger is a MAGAZINE safety. They are two different types of safetys performing two different functions. The sear safety made the upper unit unable to fire when removed from the frame. The magazine safety made the gun unable to fire by pulling the trigger when the magazine was removed. Your gun is ligit.

Top arrow is the sear safety

Bottom arrow is the magazine safety

There is a write up about about them in the FAQ,

Morgan, sear safety only police pistols are not uncommon. They are thought to correspond to the 1932 to 35 era when the magazine safety was out of favor and the police ranks were rapidly expanding. Many are not unit marked and it is a reasonable speculation that they were being issued to the early Nazi police forces. There is some liklihood, I think, that these are the most likely original SS pistols.

Now I understand! Thanks again.. I was confused about this!

I'm going to let this Luger go, as the seller suddenly raised the price, to more than IĆ¢??m willing to pay.

Well... at least I don't have to spend the night on the couch
