I have seen things like this before but I'm confused as to how it works. The diameter is much smaller than the barrel. Do you push a cleaning patch through with these?

Yes,
You wrap a patch around it, it will stick behind the teeth. Still have some original cleaning patches that came with my Swiss cleaning kit. Just plain white cotton, about an inch x 2 inches in diameter. |

Bill, I have been shown a pkg of what appears to be string used for Luger cleaning. Very course, almost rope like stuff. I believe it was Patrick Villiers of Berlin who let me see this. I forget what Patrick called it. It was written on the pkg as I remember.
There was some discussion when a member found an Artillery rod with the stuff still wrapped on it. Jerry Burney
