1937 S42
I'll throw some pictures up later tonight, co-worker just dropped off a 1937 S42 for me to clean up for him, just had time for a quick look, 1939 brown holster, take down tool, two magazines, neither matching, straw is easily 90%, has high gloss blued barrel, no pitting anywhere but light coat of surface rust on backstrap, absoultely genuine from WWII Vet to his son who got it last week for me to check out for him. External numbers match. Holster is scuffed and well worn but in overall good shape. Has owner's name and unit written in top of holster, very faint but in the correct writing style. I'll take some before and after pictures when I get it home tonight and clean it up. What's the best brown shoe polish for a holster like that?

Can't get photos uploaded, will try later, anyway, its a 1937 S42, sn 4771. All matching, only wear is on sideplate and muzzle, grips are also numbered, cleaned up very well. Bore is mirror perfect. I screwed up in my first post, I meant bluing instead of straw, all small parts have a high gloss finish. No pitting which is amazing because its been in the holster since WWII. The magazines were the nastiest part, they cleaned up well also. One had eight rounds of "WW 9mm Luger" in it. They were very corroded. Owner told me they shot it once about forty years ago. Name in holster is Gef Paul Horwart. The unit is listed below name but I can't make it out. Writing is in the old style with a very light blue ink. Was most likely a fountain pen.

[/B][/QUOTE] A tutorial on The Forum describes holster cleaning in detail and strictly forbids use of shoe polish. My preference is saddle soap for initial cleaning and Nuetragena; yeah the stuff women use on their faces. These holsters are as fragile as skin. Why not feed them the same things that keep skin looking younger? It works for me. Jack Hiles Mesa AZ |

RK, NICE!!!! Let me remind all that your serial number is not 4771, but it is 4771u!! It is most important to include the suffix letter, if there is one. With respect to 1937 Military Mausers, it is proper to have a serial number of 4771, with no suffix. In this case, it would have resulted in a false record!!
Please guys Don't forget the suffix otherwise it gets confusing and I'm confused enough as it is!!! |
