Artillery Holster & Stock markings

Recently, I've looked at several artillery holsters & stocks. Many do not have much, if anything for markings. I looked at one rig where all I could find was the letter "d" near the latch and a strange stamping on the wood that looks like a small "b" followed by three backwards "L"s. This, like others I've looked at has no serial # on the iron. Also, I've seen several old brown holsters with no makers marks or any other indicatuion of dates, etc.

I'm not a veteran collector, but I know that I am looking at genuine goods, not repro -which I have seen plenty of. There seem to be little information on holsters outside of whittington's book. Are these old commercials stock/rigs ? (just guessing).

Any info would be appreciated here , like to learn a bit about this .

The stock with the strange series of markings is almost certainly one of the many stocks purported to be for the Persian LP08. Typically these are made of an inferior wood to that found in a German made stocks. These stocks are frequently paired up with Paki holsters. Any unmarked artillery holster should put you on alert. Also any seemingly mint holster marked to HOFFMANN in Berlin should give you cause to be wary.

I had wondered about the Persian connection - now I know what to look for. I also came across something interesting in an auction going on now:

To me, the font and, for that matter, the whole serial numbers do not look right. The number on the slide is also slanting upward, as if each number was individually stamped. The "4" on the slide, the side plate, under the barrel and on the stick all look to be from the same die and different from any "4" I've seen on a luger -with the "4" open at the top. With the exception of the side plate, the other two digit #s look okay to me. I'm relatively new to this, but have experience in other makes - just my .02 worth, but things don't look right here.

The auction you point out is a timely example of exactly the type of so called "Persian" stocks and a Paki goat skin holster and pouch. The stock iron appears to have been numbered with the same set of dies as the gun. A very bad job.
