P.08 as a conc./carry weapon ?

Is anyone using a P.08 as a concealed/carry weapon ? I've considered getting my c/c permit -as a veteran in Oklahoma I don't even have to take a c/c class. Veterans here simply produce an honorable discharge and pay the fee. Would a P.08 be a viable concealed carry weapon ?

Sure, but not as reliable as a newer 9 or 10 MM?

There was a long discussion about this a few months ago. Do a search on concealed carry and see what everyone said about it. Use the search above and not the Search Old board on the left.

Luger is a romantic choice, but a poor choice for a gun you would stake your children's life on. It would be like relying on an old Colt Army 1973. There are so many better choices today in firearms that are smaller, lighter, won't snag, may be DAO if desired, have decockers and are almost 100% feed reliable with hollow-point ammunition. JMHO.

I do not think I would choose a luger for carry, either...wouldn't want to worry about a round "stove piping"...

A good P.38 would be a great choice as a similar carry weapon. I use one about 1/3 the time, a 44 magnum is my choice for the road trips and I carry a 45 H&K Compact or a .357 Magnum the rest of the time. I think a P.38 is a good weapon and I trust mine. This is my "747" P.38 that I carry!

I have to agree with Thor. I carry a Walther P1. Same thing as the P38 but, the P1 has a lighter alloy frame. Also there are many used "Like New" P1's on the market right now, these guns have been comming into the USA from Germany. I saw one last week at the local gun shop that looked brand new and was priced at 300$. The feel is simular to the luger, but the reliability and safety is much better,

As for the Luger as a carry gun. I would not carry mine with a round in the pipe. My gun has a light trigger and the only saftey is the safety lever. All it would take is to bump the safety switch and snag the trigger and disaster would befall me. So in a nut shell, I question the Lugers reliability a little and its concealed carry safety a lot. And if your thinking of carrying it with the pipe empty, statistics show that you dont have time to load it before the other guy puts three rounds in you.

Just my 2 cents.

Thor... more pics of your commercial P.38s, please! I absolutely love Walthers. In addition to a P-5, a PPK/s, a TPH & a mint AC-41, I have two commercial high polish P.38s. One has a duraluminum frame & the other has an unusual steel frame. It has an oversized trigger guard & a threaded channel in the magwell for a trigger stop. This one has an extremely high polish mirror finish & is superbly accurate.

The only carry gun that suits me is one of the Kahr range. Simple, compact for it's caliber, well made, accurate and reliable. I used to carry a variety, including a Kimber 45, but now I've weeded out every non essential gun, the K9 is still in the safe. Try one, you may like it.

For reliability, the best of the "modern" guns are probably better than a Luger, but the worst are far far worse. I had a popular backup gun that was a real jammomatic. I changed magazines, changed ammo, etc. to no avail. At least one jam in every magazine full. No two jams alike. When it threw a loaded round on the ground eight feet in front of me I got rid of it.

Depending on weather and concealment factor, I use a P1, a PP, and a .25 Haenel Schmeisser. All are accurate, safe, and reliable. Once had a SIG 380, never got thru a box of any type of ammo without multiple jams, really disappointing.

A recently discovered (by me at least) pawn shop has a nice byf44 P-38 (all-matching) for $395 and apparently has had the piece for two years - it's a thought....of course, I was also recently offered a tiny .25 auto Belgian velo-dog with 0% finish and a neat-o-keen folding trigger.....no ? [img]wink.gif[/img]

I carry a P-08 from time to time but I have also been known to take my Desert Eagle [img]wink.gif[/img] . I never had any problems
with any of my Lugers being reliable BUT like many people have said you don't want one in the bbl and that only gives you about 6 or 7 shots.

My 1st pick is my Walther P99 in 40S&W or Colt C Commander in .45 My PP is always my back up.

Here's my two cents worth. Why risk a nice collectible gun like a wartime P-38 or any Luger to that kind of situation? If you get into a shooting, even justified, the gun is going to be taken as evidence until the case is adjudicated. That could take years. You also have to consider the possibility of damage if its dropped.

I've been active, fulltime law enforcement for 18 years and the other guys are right, don't trust your life to a Luger when there are other, better options available. To me a 9MM is the minimum I would carry. .380's and .25's will just piss someone off. For off duty I either carry a Glock Mod. 27 in .40 or a Para Ordnance LDA single stack in .45. Any small .45 or .40 is better than a 9MM. Why do you think law enforcement agencies are going to the .40 in droves? Because it out performs the 9MM in real life shootings. My dept. change from the 9MM Glocks we had just purchased and went to the Glock 22 .40 because people weren't staying shot with the 9.

I forgot to add: There are other choices besides a Glock or 1911 type gun, as far as autos go. Talk with people who actually carry guns and find out the pros and cons of the different sizes, mechanisms and calibers. Really do your home work in this area. Don't forget about revlovers, too. Small .38's, 357's, and .44 specials are good choices. I know most people favor more bullets than a revolver will carry and I'm no different, you can't have too many bullets in a gunfight. But when you consider that the vast majority of shootings last about 2.5-3 seconds with 3-4 rounds total being fired between good guy and bad guy a good wheel gun could fit the bill.

Above all, when you make the decision to carry concealed, take a class that teaches the moral and legal aspects of using deadly force. Once you pull the trigger there is no going back.

Hello Jim,

I'm working Law Enforcement too....around here in Montreal...

Service piece is Walther P99 9mm w/ WIN 147gr SXT...happy with the gun, so-so with the ammo...

Favorites concealed carry pieces are:

Glock 19...nice size, slick
Colt LW Cmdr 45...The Perfect Gun...
S&W M66 357 2 1/2 in...small w/ punch...

I also like the following for their small size:

PPK 380
Beretta 25 ( special situations )
Agent / Det. Spl 38...nice pointability...

And if I have to get in trouble:

S&W M29 44 MAG w/ Silvertips...

Those are my pics at the moment but I understand that this is a personnal question and everyone has theirs favorites...

General consensus is a good 1911, high cap 9mm or a Magnum plus the small concealable ones....

Confidence in what is carried in the main point...

I normally carry a Glock 19 in 9 mm. I load it with Cor-Bon 115+P HP ammo. Very hot, very effective. I also have a S&W 640 .38 Special loaded with 158 gr. +P lead HP's. and, at times I use a Colt National Match .45 loaded with Fed. 230
Gr. HP's. My Luger is for enjoyment, not serious situations. But, you could do a lot worse.

What ever you carry, make up your mind ahead of time as to under what conditions you will use the
pistol to defend your self. NO time to decide when it hits the fan.

Keep in mind that nothing is going to stop someone
with one shot all the time. Shot placement is everything. Every gone deer hunting? You can see what I mean.

Good Luck and I hope ya don't need to use it!
