Fellows: When and under what circumstances were the stock lugs on PO8s removed/ground off?

IIRC, it was during the late ‘60s/early 70’s that there seemed to rumors/misinformation/what have you… that a stock lug was an NFA violation in and of itself (i.e., constructive possession of a short-barreled rifle), resulting in some dealers/importers grinding off the lugs.

According to my Father, now deceased, who owned numerous Lugers in the 1920's and 1930's, the removal of stock lugs began after the NFA in 1934 because people misunderstood the law. Thankfully only a small percentage were mutilated that way.
The very first Luger I bought, an Alphabet Commercial, was from a pawn shop in Seattle in 1966 and the stock lug had been partly ground off. |

My very first Luger purchase was/is a very, very nice, all-matching 1917/1920 Artillery. Its stock lug had been entirely removed.
There is a guy who will build up weld on the heel of the frame, and mill out a stock lug to spec. IIRC, I saw a YouTube about him and the process for which he charged $500.
