commercial luger mystery

I recently purchased form a friend who was moving out of the country a luger pistol. He bought it form a widow of a US soldier who said her husband brought it back from ww2. The pistol it self is in excellent condition with all matching numbers and almost all its original bluing (9mm). It is marked DWM on the toggle, has a crown over N proof and the serial number ****n. It is also stamped Germany. It is in an original black German military flap holster with some kind of eagle stamped on the back. It came with 2 wooden bottomed magazines and the magazine tool. There are three tiny notches filed on the corner of the top the frame near the barrel(they look like they have been there for 50 years). Is there any chance this commercial luger was actually used in World War Two? I am new to this forum and am not a luger expert of any kind but I would appreciate any help!
