.30 vs 9mm?

Stopping power... which was why the change took place in the first place. .30 just doesn't pack the punch.

The .30 Luger is literally the case mouth was as wide as the rear area. The .30 is tapered and to make it more powerful as Dok said, the caliber was enlarged to 9 MM.

The 9 may be more "powerful", and cheaper, and easier to find at Wallyworld, but the 30 is sure a heckuv a lot more fun to shoot!

If you want to go with the .30, either find a source of ammo that you can buy in large lots or learn to reload. Starline brass has the brass and several bullet companies make ones for it. It is much like the .30 Mauser in that ammo is hard to find but is available if you look hard enough.

A good source for .30 factory ammo is Fiocchi.

Not sure, if these are marketed in the U.S.

Bought some yesterday to use with my latest addition which is a SIG 210-4, this came with an exchange barrel in .30 Luger.

The Fiocchi 93 grs. FMJ are running at approx. $ 245/1000 over here.

Fiocchi is available here in the states. It have not bought any for some time though. The last itme I did it was about $8.00 for a box of 20 rounds.

Fiocchi ammo is available here. I have only bought one box and the half dozen Lugers I fired it in didnt like it one bit. It was too light a load for them and wouldn't even eject the emptys. The Lapua Finnish ammo is availbe too and I hear it is a moderate load that should work well. I have also heard tales that the limited production Winchester Ammo is HOT, and I dont recommend shooting it. I hand load all my ammo and it has just enough power to work the action, not too hot and not too weak. ~Thor~

To Tom C. et al, I do have new Fiocci 30 Luger AND 30 Mauser ammo available @$25 post paid per box of 50 rounds. $20 per box for 3 or more boxes. I'm surprised that no one in this sequence mentioned that 30 Luger has a flatter trajectory (less drop being a lighter bullet) and less recoil than 9mm, so is perfered by many bullseye shooters. But how accurate can you be with the standard fixed sights on a luger? Tom h

I buy ammunition by the case, and pay about $100 per 1,000 rounds of high quality (Fiocchi, S&B) 9x19 Parabellum ammunition.


The best price Iâ??ve found on Winchester 7.65 Parabellum was $25/box of 50. Iâ??ve bought Fiocchi 7.65 Parabellum at $18.00 box of 50 (but had to buy 20 boxes to get that price.) SAMCO currently has Finn milsurp 7.65 Parabellum:

As you can see, 7.65 Parabellum is about two to three times expensive as 9x19 Parabellum.


Itâ??s been my experience that the 7.65 Parabellum is somewhat more accurate than 9x19 Parabellum, but not enough to matter in anything other than serious match shooting. The 7.65 Parabellum also has slightly greater penetration than does 9x19 Parabellum but thatâ??s no usually an important issue.
