reboring barrel?

Dear Experts:

Is it feasible/possible/practical to rebore a .30 caliber Luger barrel to 9mm?

Hi jeffs!

I`m not an expert, but I think you could buy a barrel of 9 mm, if you want to change the caliber of your gun. Don`t spoil the original, please.

I concur with the above comment. While it is certainly possible, it is not inexpensive to have a barrel rebored and rifled... The least expensive path is purchase/installaion of a 9mm barrel for shooting purposes and retain the original in case you wish to restore the gun to original condition.

Yes, buying a 9mm barrel would certainly be preferable. Mainly, I am just curious if the shorter length of the .30 barrel would affect the recoil necessary to operate the toggle action.

Jeff,

No, there's not enough difference in length. The barrel would have to be significantly (several inches) longer to create any problems.

My arty is more reliable than any of my 4" for some reason..
At which point is the barrel too long and the mass just too big?

Hi Steinar,

Once the barrel gets past 12 inches or so, issues begin to occur with balancing the mass of the barrel and pressure curve with the main spring.

Numrich Gun Parts used to sell 16" barrel carbine coversion kits. I've heard that they didn't function well, and I believe they have quit selling them.

The differences in barrel mass between a "standard" .30 and a "standard" 9mm will have no difference on the action of the pistol. The difference in the cartridge power, however, will.

A 9mm Luger has a more powerful recoil spring, to enable proper operation with the more powerful load. My experience in shooting a 9mm-rebarreled .30 is that the pistol is more sensitive to "limp wristing" and the toggle tail beats the heck out of the back of the frame.
