Post Unidentifiable Luger

Fellows: Please help me out with this. I don't know what I have. I picked up this S-42 1937 dated Luger. This Luger came out of a private estate and owned by the one fellow for over 30 years. As you can see, it has the rear Navy toggle. The gun has matched numbers throughout, excepting the front sight blade. It has adjustable front sight, 100-200 meter rear Navy-type sight, Proper Eagle 63 proofs. Barrel is numbered to the gun as well, but there is no barrel proof. I know that there were no Navys made in 1937 with a 6" barrel and rear Navy sight. Maybe someone out there can tell me more about this intriguing weapon. I am trying to post photos but not having much luck. I'll keep trying

Would love to have your help. I will e-mail them to you. I have seven photos, so I'll break it up in a couple messages. what is your e-mail address?

Thank you for your help. I can't get the system to work for me - I've the loaded the pictures following the wonderful tutorial - but as soon as the picture is loaded, it does not give me a URL, as tutorial indicates. I'm confused but will send photos for you to post for me.

Thank you and best regards,

The gunman

Pete. Thanks again for your help. I have e-mailed 7 photos. My wife has done this for me, as I couldn't figure out how to do it . She is off on a trip on Saturday and will be gone for a week, so I will not be able to post any additional photos for the next 7 days.

Thank you again for your help.

Hello Folks,

I helped The Gunman by posting seven (7) photographs of his luger in the Member's Gallery. Photo jpeg size was large and I thought the high-resolution look up in the Gallery would be more useful. If you double click on each photo several times, they will "blow up" to their full size and resolution...

Regards,

Pete... <img border="0" alt="[typing]" title="" src="graemlins/yltype.gif" />

Looks to me that some enterprizing gunsmith put a replacement Navy rear toggle and a 6 inch barrel on a standard 1937 S/42. Looks pretty and I'm sure it makes a great shooter.

If he could have gotten a DWM frame and a Vickers toggle, he would have really had a first class Frankenluger.

Hi gentleman not looking to annoy anyone .on this gun I bought this with 2 other lugers. and am very happy with the deal I got. Im selling this for what I have into it we have all heard this story before .but its a truthfull.
story on my part, this piece was made up at least 30 years ago by who or where i dont know . I offer it for what it is no stories. its the way i bought it .I am not trying to offer it as anything but what it is. Its a great shooter, great looker and a hell of a fair price for what
it is. I AM NOT MISREPSENTING ANYTHING

Hi Gunman,
I think you have provided the membership a text book example of what can and does happen when one has a faster hand for the check book than for the reference book.
No personal disrepect intended, we in this Luger game learn as we go. Unfortunately, experience carries a very high tuition in the Luger game. A $75 dollar investment in a couple of reference books could have saved you about $1600, which is my estimate of how much you overpaid.

Please, before you buy any more Lugers, buy and study the books.

You have hit exactly on the situation. Not to be one to promote Luger-breaking, but in your case this gun is worth quite a bit more as parts than as a whole piece. Whether or not it might reach your own value estimation remains to be seen.

All,
I must admit that the gunman has a point; I simply never entertain calculating value based on an assumption of parting out a piece.
Maybe thats a good indicator of a collector vice a dealer..

I have a Luger that is very similar to this one. It has an S/42 forward toggle link and breech block, Navy rear sight, 1940 dated receiver, and a 6" un-numbered 7.65mm barrel. It was made up by an employee of a gun shop here in El Paso that has been closed for nearly 20 years. I bought it last year for $450. I think that it is worth more than that, but not a whole lot.
