COUPLA QUESTIONS

Inherited a Luger and red nine c96 and I have been doing research on them. Will probably sell them both. Why do people choose not to post the complete s/n online, and also what are the laws governing the sale or transfer of these older weapons?

BB, Both of these pistols are classified as Curios, but not antiques, so most states do require a permit to purchase. You may sell these to a licensed dealer (FFL or FCL) holder in your state, or local gunshow, without him needing a state permit. I you plan to ship either out of your state, you must have them shipped from a licensed dealer in PA to a licensed persons in another state, and in the case of CA, it must be a state approved transfer dealer. I'm sure that many members of this forum would be interested in further details, prices and photos, if available. TH

Here are a couple of reasons I think that people don't want to show their serial numbers;

As a dealer, there have been some people who bought the gun, took the numbered part off of it, then returned it as somethig they didn't want. The dealer, if they did not notice now has a unmatching gun. But then why wouldn't the dealer say, sorry, you swapped parts, no return of money?

An individual is afraid that someone will know what gun they have, i.e. claim it was theirs and thus stolen, that uncle sam would then know what they have or some such paranoid views. Personally, I find it a bit odd, I see people who xx out the serial number, then post pictures of it...

And not to sound too negative, but the vast majority of the people on forums don't share info, pictures, stories or even comment on anything, they simply lurk...

BTW, I am sure that Tom was making a general comment, because you wouldn't need to ship from PA since you live in LA

I would send you my FFL 03 and you would ship the pistol to my house.

Thanks for the reply. The luger is marked 1937, s/42 s/n 9094 all parts matching including magazine. One extra magazine w/different s/n.
Seems to be original condition. Some slight pitting. Not experienced enough to judge percentage on finish. Holster may not be original
because it has P38 stamped on rear. Will try to post pics later.
C96 Red nine is in very good shape-s/n 57179 all matching parts, w/wooden stock, leather holster w/cleaning rod. Also have German belt and buckle that was with it, and a gold Mothers Medal cross with ribbons in case.

The P38 holster is very close to the luger holster, so many people get the two "mated" together. The pitting will bring price down a bit.

Your Red Nice is worth more, if it has an original holster, wooden stock, and german belt and buckle, a rig like that is worth fair money.

How much are you thinking on selling them for?

Ed, Sorry if I got his state of residence wrong, but when I left Calif. they were requiring ALL firearms transfers to go thru transfer dealers, even to FCLs or non transfer FFL dealers or your brother, so that the state could get it's $15 transfer fee. Has that changed? TH

bbirder, The good news is that your Luger didn't cost you anything...the bad news is that your photos of both sides of your Luger appears to show a rather pitted finish, like it was exposed to salt water conditions and not well lubricated or protected a long time ago.

This will have a dramatic negative impact on the market value... Despite the matching numbers, I doubt that it would be valued at much more than $500...if that much... Pity...

If the pits are not too deep, a new owner might consider it for restoration, but the cost of that would then place it in the same ballpark as buying one that is not pitted and is all original finish...

It should make a nice shooter... Good Luck.
