hello everyone I have a commercial luger with the serial number 7017 all the numbers appeared to match it is a 30 caliber also it has a letter n over a crown.. My question is can a commercial Lugar thats in good shape be considered a collector or

because it's a commercial are they just considered shooters ?I've tried to load a picture but I have had trouble doing this. thanks for any help I could get mike

If all matching and original then collector value will depend upon condition. It also depends upon which model commercial you have. Some are more collectable than others. Can you post lots of good quality pictures of your Luger for us to see? A better answer can be given if we can look at the pistol in question.

In the first place, Commercial is a category, not a condescention. There are a number of different Luger varieties which have "Commercial" variations, your brief descripition is insufficient to identify which one it might be.

The principle considerations in evaluating a Luger are 1. Condition, 2. Condition, and 3. Condition. Even if you have the most common, 1920s-era Commercial Luger, in prime condition it is still a collection-quality gun. In fact, because the 1920s Alphabet Commercial is the most plentiful variation, their cost is relatively moderate and this can be a good way to start out a serious Luger collection.

From your single picture it seems you have a 1920 Commercial - also called an "Alphabet" Commercial - Luger. Your full serial number is 7017 "o". I placed the letter "o" in quotation marks to prevent it from being mistaken as a zero. Note that the last two digits of the serial number are stamped under the sideplate and locking bolt (take-down lever). Until the "Alphabet" commercial Lugers appeared in the early 1920's, commercial Lugers didn't have a suffix letter in the serial number and were in the high 5-digit range. With the Alphabet Lugers, they reverted to four digits and a suffix letter. Serial number placement and proofs were consistent with previous commercial Lugers.

As Dwight has said, they are the most common of all Lugers but in 90% or better condition and all-matching, they bring a fair price and are a great way to begin a Luger collection. Yours appears to easily be 90% if the rest of the gun matches what I can see. They are also great shooters.... very accurate. Your pistol is probably in .30 caliber.

the rest of the gun is like which you see and the grips are in very good condition also. It is a 30 caliber I have not shot it yet. If it is a collector grade is it ok to shoot?what I mean is will it hurt the value any.

I think you know the answer to your question already. There is no need to take the chance of damaging a numbered part on a collection-quality Luger when there are plenty of non-collection-quality guns out there to shoot.

If you want to shoot a Luger--and I highly recommend the activity, they are lot of fun--and can afford a second gun, find a mismatched or refinished Luger in 9mm and have at. I'm recommending 9mm because the ammunition is plentiful and cheap, as opposed to .30 Luger which is scarce and expensive.
