Post Auction fever

Went to a local auction this morning. This gun was advertized "Beautiful 1930's German Luger 9mm stainless steel & bone handle pistol". Thought if the price was right it may make a good piece for Thor to work his magic on. Well there it was a DWM that had been buffed so hard befort plating that the chamber date was buffed away, barrel number was gone, proofs were gone, edges were rounded. No collector value, figured if it went for around $300 it would be a shooter and also represent what GI's had done after the war. It sold for $1500! The fellow who bought was as happy as a clam. Not to be outdone an Army dagger with rust on the blade(no maker)and dinged scabbard brought $350. Two Jap bayonets, with the most common arsinal mark, brought $75 and $80. Who said the economy is bad?

I think people get stupid at auctions.

You see on TV where they say auctions are where you get good prices, but when I have gone and there are a "few" guns, the gun prices go for way to much. Last fall, I went to one where there was a Plainfield M1 Carbine. This is the one made during the 60's and 70's, very little collector value and it went for like $450. They also had a 1911, nice gun, except the slide was a Remington Rand, and it still went for $950 and the guy acted like he got a good deal!

Hello Carl! Any more stories to share with me? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> Nothing exciting happening with me, wife is dragging me off to see Aspen in a few minutes...

Carl,
I thought about attending the same auction. Past experience has shown that a Sunday auction with only a few guns available draws prices that are way out of line. Just wanted to see a beautiful 1930's stainless steel Luger. Very rare item! After seeing the results,I may have to contact that auctioneer about consigning a few lugers for his next sale.
Best Regards,
Bill
