Replace barrel or not?

When having a shooter reworked, what is done to a barrel if there is still deep rifleing, but has alot of pitting? Is there anything that can be done to save the old barrel? What is the process that occurs when this happens?

Any info would be greatly appriciated!!!

USMC,

If the gun really is a shooter, take it to the range first and shoot it. You may find that it shoots very accurately anyway, and there is therfore no reason to mess with the barrel. This is, at least, the conventional wisdom concering Lugers.

Let us all know how the test comes out.

Hi USMC,

I think Dwight is right on target - take it to the range before doing anything - and try some different brands of ammo - then decide.... For example - I had a really crappy bore on one of my .30 Luger commercials that shot the snot off a wart hog at 25 yards (that's pretty accurate

)

Anyway - as Dwight mentions - post back what happens, OK?

USMC, I agree with Dwight and John D...Shoot it first. It is an expensive proposition to change out a barrel. I would guess $150.00 or more. If it shoots fine why change it? If you ever do change it I would consider a 6" barrel. They are really sweet. They require a taller front sight though...Jerry Burney

Add me to the list of those who say shoot it first to see what the existing barrel will do. I have a 1927 Argentine Colt .45 with the original barrel. The bore is a sewer pipe. Funny thing, though.... it shoots beautifully, especially with cast bullets! I've owned the pistol a dozen years or more and it still sports the original barrel. I can't imagine a new barrel being one bit more accurate!

I took everyone's advice and took it to the shooting range, and shot very good groups at 25 yards. Actually the 9mm luger shot better groups than all of the pistols myself & a friend had brought with us (9mm ruger, ruger mkII, 32 S&W, 40 cal beretta)!! I tried 9mm Winchester Luger 115gr loads, and was very pleased with the results!
