Question Unscrewing Barrel

The project is to unscrew the barrel from a LUGER receiver without damaging both.

Questions:

Can that be undertaken by the untrained individual or it's strickly a Gunsmith's job?

What are the basic tools needed? ( I heard of barrel blocks made of wood? )

What is the procedure?

Thanks for the information

Kidvett, Too bad that your are in Canada, or I'd offer to do the job for you. If you you've never removed a luger barrel before and/or don't have the correct wrench and vise shims, I don't recommend that you try it. Rick W's advise is right on. Thirty years ago, before I knew what I was doing, I made all the mistakes that he mentions, doing it the first time. Just to let you know how much force was required, the shotout 20 commerical barrel that I was removing, actually twisted 90 degrees, before the threads let go. Tom H.

A word of caution, a friend of mine wanted to remove his barrel of his luger and replace it with a shooter's barrel.

Well the gunsmith he took it to was inept and basically compressed the original barrel to the degree of warping it. Bastard still charged my buddy $75 for the "service." So careful who you take it to.

I recommend that you send it to Tom Heller or Hugh Clark... to get the job done right.

Thor may do this kind of work, but I think he spends the majority of his time refinishing...

If there are others that do this work that I have not mentioned and can guarantee their work, please chime in here... espccially if you are located in Canada.
