Post LP-08 Artiglieria, by Mauro Baudino

I just received my copy of mauro's book on the Artillery from Paris this morning. I am impressed with the extensive research Mauro has done..An excellent work and while most of it is in Italian it is subtitled in English. Well worth the money, I recommend it to anyone who is interested in expanding their knowledge of not only the LP-08 but the history behind it.

The frontspiece shows a photo of Mauro and a Luger Forum Patch..Really nicely done.

I was able to pay with Pay Pal so it was easy to convert dollars to Euro's. Many good photo's too.

Excellent work Mauro! Jerry Burney

m.baudino@libero.it This is Mauro's Email address Tom. I think he can ship you one if you use Pay Pal. It converts to Euro's with no problem. Your Herd Bud, Jerry Burney

I'd like to second Jerry's favorable review of Mauro's book. There are many excellent historical photos of LP08's in the book, as well as other information that is not readily found elsewhere. And, it's at a bargain price!

Very nice book. I may be prejudiced, since my Artillery Luger is pictured a couple of times, but I'd like the book anyway.

BTW, Mine is the BW pictures with the '9' on the grips.

I'd love to get a copy of the order that specified the 9 be carved into the grips, since I've never been able to locate a concrete reference to it. Anyone that knows where I could obtain such a copy, please let me know.

There was never a directive specifically to carve 9 into the grips of LP-08. There was, apparently, a War Ministry directive to mark "all long Mauser pistols [C-96 Broomhandle] cal. 9mm" with the red 9 (G¶rtz & Bryans, "German Small Arms Markings" p.130). Conventional speculation has it that the red-9 Luger grips area a result of misinterpreting the directive.

I haven't seen a copy of the actual Mauser directive, and don't know its date.

Hello John,
thank you so much for your kind word.
Please find here a scan of Kriegsministerium directive dated December, 14 1917. As you can see, the LP08 is not mentioned. Actually DWM was misleading as Deutschen Waffenfabrick Mauser and so the 9 was engraved also to the LP08.

Received my copy today in the mail. Wish it was in English but the pictures and layout is very nice and it is worth every Euro!

Good Job Mauro and thanks,

Interesting. I was thinking along the lines of preventing the 7.63mm from being used in 9mm pistols, which would be ineffective, but not dangerous. I didn't really consider the reverse; as the directive says, firing 9mm in a 7.63mm pistol will result in damage to the pistol.

I also note that this applies only to the Army. IIRC, Mauser pistols were also issued to the Navy. Were any 9mm pistols used by the Navy? If so, the Navy would not be affected by (probably would not even receive) this directive and unless there was an equivalent Navy order, their 9mm pistols on hand might not have been marked. Just one more puzzle.
