On my 1918 DWM Luger there is a 7MM hole in the left side of the
frame under the trigger plate slightly above and behind the trigger
pivot hole. I can see no apparent purpose for this hole. The hole is
not present on my 1911 Erfurt nor have I seen it on any other Lugers
or on any diagrams. Can any one explain the purpose of the hole
or is this just an anomaly?

Is you P.08 a police model by any chance? Does it have a rectangular notch just behind the side plate? The only reason I know for a hole there is for the magazine safety.

The hole appears to be correct for the magazine safety as shown in the
diagram but there is no frame cut. The pistol is a Simpson rework possible
for police use. The underside of the barrel is marked :
"ZDF SLC UT P-08 9mm GER"
All other markings other than Simpson proof appear to be German Military.

The ZDF etc. on the barrel is an importers mark and I quote from an earlier inquiry about this mark: "The markings are ZDF Import/Export Inc., otherwise known as Robinson Armament Company, P.O. Box 16776, Salt Lake City, Utah 84116. Their web site is www.robarm.com ". The fact that your Luger does not have a frame cut could be because the modification was never completed, since the magazine safety was proving to be more trouble than it was worth. Or, there are some examples where this cut has been expertly welded up during rework and is difficult to see that it ever was there. The hole was probably too large to weld up and is covered up by the side plate anyway.
