I know exactly how you feel, dear friend. Can foreign tyranny be any worse than we currently face?

My sympathies to you guys with these politically correct idiot goverments.....here in Canada we are facing similar nonsense....targeting law abiding hunters and gun owners whilst thugs and gangsters blast away at each other with unregistered illegal firearms....our goverments are quite happy to give us weapons and let us kill or be killed in times of war.!!!!!!!I personally feel that some politicians are worried that a bunch of really angry armed citizens might stage an uprising and overthrow them(like in the old days!!!)....I think we must remain vigilant and play our part in keeping our elected officials absolutely accountable for their actions....Peter

Avatar,
Can you tell us a little more about the situation you (and your Luger) face? What is going on over there? |

Have a look under the General Discussions page on this message board. Check out the discussion "Poll-ban of automatic handguns". For those who are unaware, the anti-gun Australian Prime Minister,(who has stated publicly he "hates guns") who was responsible for the 1996 Australian "buy-back", which resulted in over 600,000 privately owned firearms being confiscated and destroyed, now wants a ban on the private ownership of handguns. |

They're not that sophisticated Herb.
It's just ignorance, plain and simple. |

Ken,
Why not find a friend in another country that does not have your problem. Take this 1916 apart and ship all the parts (in many separate boxes... labeled "misc. machine parts"...) to your friend so he/she can re-assemble and safe-guard this gun for you ? Pete... |

Yes, nice idea.
However this gun is on the books (registered) and as handguns are already strictly controlled here it would be very difficult to explain where it had suddenly disappeared to. I think the plods would take a very dim view if you tried pleading that it had been stolen, especially in light of all the goings on recently. Cheers |

I recently purchased an artillery luger holster and stock off of an Aussie gentleman. He mentioned that the Australian police are not forth coming with acturate information regarding pistol ownership. Could it be that you just happen to be talking to the wrong officer? You may be talking to a cop who hates guns and is not giving you the real truth about the law. The same could happen here in the USA where gun laws vary from state to state and, sometimes, from city to city. The police are not lawyers.

I am so sorry for your situation. I really hate it. I know you don't want to, but I'd find that beautiful piece of history a new home with someone before I'd let them torch it. Not much help, but it's another option to letting them win.

I think I have an idea that could save these pistols from the furnace...
Owners of Lugers in Australia could ship all their Lugers and accessories to one person in the United States that will act as an agent to create an historical Collection... Historical in the viewpoint of the years of service and also with respect to the fight for personal freedoms. It could be called "the Lugers of Australia" and be displayed in a museum along with the story of the loss of the personal rights "down under"... I'll bet the NRA might be interested in housing such an exhibit as part of their fight to hold onto our second amendment rights... or it could even be part of a mobile display for use at gunshows and such. All we need is a licensed importer to act as the agent, and for the gun owners to pay the shipping. It sure beats having them melted down and used to make car bodies or farm implements... Of course if this idea doesn't fly, I offer personal sanctuary to any Luger refugee that can make it to our shores... I can guarantee that it will never be sold while I am alive... and will be passed on to be enjoyed by new generatons of Luger enthusiasts... Any Aussie who opts for either of these solutions can contact me personally so we can figure out how to get them here... and you are guaranteed free visiting privileges for life... and NO. I am not joking about any of this.

Avatar, I like the suggestion of taking it apart and shipping it hither and yon. I would think that you could tell anyone asking that you couldn't hold onto it while shooting it from a boat on the ocean. OOps!Another idea if you are a poor liar is to turn in only the frame. The rest of the parts are not considered the gun. These are gut wrenching choices I know. Might as well salvage what you can. Courage my friend. Without a body they rarely convict. Jerry Burney

The guns are a piece of our common history. Destroy the guns means destroy a piece of our history. Before WWII the Nazi destroyed books now somebody wants to destroy guns. In my understanding the level is the same. We don't solve our problems destroying piece of history.
I am very sad! Mauro

This is rather sad that short-sighted politicians (liberal or conservative) must do this to pieces of history. As a history major it grieves me to see wanton destruction of history. It is equivalent to the first emperor of China burning the books, to the Nazis burning books. I'd settle for the less savory method of deactivating them and putting them in a museum. Historical items should not be destroyed/melted into slag.

Unfortunately the people who are trying to ban handguns don't see these things as pieces of history, it's just another gun to them. Maybe they're right about that, I don't know. What I do know is that they consider firearm owners to be on about the same level as pedophiles, rapists and murderers and they aren't going to stop until we are all gone. Makes me tired just thinking about it. We don't really have the numbers of gun owners in this country (we have a different firearms ownership history to you guys in the US even though we are from the same backgrounds) to put up a political party, all we can do is direct our votes to the least anti-firearm political parties. We have the left wing Greens, the left wing Democrats, the left wing Labour Party and the centre-left Liberal Party to choose from. Does this clarify our situation?....
That is a very gracious offer of yours John. I'm not sure about the regulations concerning exporting firearms from Oz and importing into the US. I'm sure it would be some kind of a red tape nightmare, however if anybody knows something about it please let everyone know. I have just got to say, while I'm in typing mode, I have been involved in a number of forums around the net and have found this one to be one of the friendliest and helpful I have found to date, a truly great bunch of guys willing to offer help to just about anyone in a friendly and positive way. Great stuff. |

Red tape or not... My offer stands.
It may be feasible to do this if the guns were collected in Australia and shipped as a unit for this explicit purpose... AVATAR, Is there some kind of collectors association where you could contact any quantity of Luger owners down under and make them aware of this option to avoid the death sentence for their Lugers? Anyone with accurate information about what legal actions would be necessary to accomplish this migration of historical Lugers to the United States for display in a "Lugers of Australia" collection please contact me ASAP by private message.
