Looking at a 1916 DWM
with a Unit Marking of
57.R.1
Thoughts?

Nice looking Luger. The unit mark means: Infanterie Regiment Herzog Ferdinand von Braunschweig (8. Westfälisches) Nr. 57, 1. Kompagnie. Station was Wesel.
It is the first one I see with this unit mark and it is of interest for me, because I live near Wesel.
Unusual is that the unit mark is missing the number of the Luger in the company. There are only a few 1916 dated Lugers with unit mark. It was part of the VII. Army Corps during the Great War.
I have an altered Reichsrevolver holster with a unit stamp of this regiment.

Yeah I have not seen a Unit Mark that did not include a # for the Pistol
and I did find this unusual as well

31.R. means Infanterie Regiment Graf Bose (1. Thüringisches) Nr. 31; station was Altona.
A unit mark without a number of a company and a weapon number makes no sense and are not according the stamping order from 1909.
I have some comments about the reasons for missing the company and the weapon number but these would need a lot of work to declare it and would bring me to the border of my English knowledge.

Unter "Allgemeine Bestimmungen" der Vorschrift über das Stempeln der Handwaffen vom 28. Januar 1909 steht direkt aufgeführt, warum die Stempelvorschrift eingeführt wurde:
Die Stempelung soll im wesentlichen nur dazu dienen, die Waffen, während sie im Gebrauch sind, für den inneren Dienst des Truppenteils und den einzelnen Mann leicht kenntlich zu machen. Und sie galt nur in Friedenszeiten. Die gesamte Stempelvorschrift ist 34 Seiten stark und zeigt die gesamte Heeresstruktur jener Tage, einschließlich der reserve- und Ersatztruppen in Beispielen, die im Grunde jede Stempelung entziffern lassen.
Insofern macht es eben keinen Sinn, nur die Regimentsnummer ohne weitere Nummer überhaupt keinen Sinn.
In diesem Fall würde 31. R. 1 Infanterie Regiment Stab, Waffe 1 (Insofern hab ich ganz oben einen Flüchtigkeitsfehler gemacht)
31. R. 1. 5. würde Infanterie Regiment 31, 1. Kompagnie Waffe 5 bedeuten und
31. R. MG. 5 würde Infanterie Regiment 31 Maschinengewehr Kompagnie Waffe 5 bedeuten

bei der Kavallerie gab es Eskadron anstatt Kompagnien und

bei der Feldartillerie gab es Batterien (17. A.4.6. = Feldartillerie Reg.17. 4. Batterie Waffe6) und

bei der Fußartillerie gab es Bataillons (3. A.F.III.1.H.5 = Fußartillerie Reg. 3, 2. Bataillon, 1. Haubitze, Waffe 5)
