grip screw tap

Hi to all, I need a tap for P.08 grip screw thread and over the years I know some of the forum members had some made? I sure could use one now... They are #10 X 30 and taps #10 X 24 & #10 X 32 won't work! Anyway, let me know at gctomeks@msn.com best, til...lat'r....GT....

A few years back there was a thread about the issue of buggered grip screw threads in frames, what the original tapping was, etc. It's a Whitworth thread, and maybe someone can recall the exact diameter and pitch is on the plans John Sabato cleaned up and sold on CD.

I don't at the moment recall exactly how, but I found a source and bought one to chase out the threads on my 1906 AE shooter. At the moment, the tap's exact whereabouts in my stuff are still to be determined, but it's in the gun room for sure.

Even though it's just a few threads, and the S.A.E. taps come pretty close to spec, they're not right. I think attempts to run screws of pitches other than original into the tappings distorts the threads and makes them cranky at accepting original screws thereafter.

The grip screws use a "Whitworth" British thread profile. it changes the angle of the thread.

Hi to all, sadly, I have exhausted all those resources, and they either don't have, and are not going to have... or, they are too expensive, say as in $200.00 bucks!!!!

You can make a tap for limited use to chase and clean up an existing thread. Have someone familiar with a lathe cut the thread and harden it. Screw it in from the inside so that it starts straight and run it in.
