Sad shape Navy

During the Weimar Era was it normal for the chamber date, 1917, to be stamped into left side of the frame like this Navy? Picture 4 in the slide show. Despite it's rough condition, looks correct to my untrained eye, but the forum knows best ! Happy Thanksgiving.

I am no specialist, but as I have a grip safety P04 in my collection, I have read up on these in the past.

Referring to volume II of 'The Borchardt & Luger Automatic Pistols', it says, in the production P04's based on the standard P08 (short) frame due to the exigencies of wartime manufacture; these pistols bear the year of manufacture, 1916 or 1917, over the chamber, on the left frame rail and foresight bed.

Hi Bill,
I specialize in Imperial Navy Lugers and I can assure you that the gun in question is a 100% authentic 1917 Navy. It's condition may be poor, but honest it is!

Also "the 1917 dated guns have 2.4mm high digit serial numbers, as contemporary DWM made P08's " The 1916 dated Navy guns have 1.8mm high digit serial numbers.

This is not accurate Richard. Despite what Dr Sturgess has written, 1917 Navies up to serial #1000n/s or so, had the earlier 1.8mm high serial numbers, all subsequent 1917's had the 2.4mm high numbers. The highest known small numbered 1917 is #989, the lowest known with large numbers is #1100.
