Does the color of the holster mean something?

I was at a gun show last week and saw a few Luger holsters, I saw black and brown colored and was told the black colored ones are for military issued and the brown colored were Navy issued is that right or any truth to that? I also saw a black 1936 deadhead is what they called it and it had a stamp on it and it was very expensive and I wanted to know why and what does that mean?

Just trying to learn as much as I can about these guns and there accessory.

The color of the holster does not indicate anything about the branch of service it was issued to. I'm not sure who started this rumor, but I think some books were published that had this mis-information in it, and it spread.

As for the DH marked holster, I'd have to see it to confirm it. These are extremely rare, and most often are fakes. Did you happen to take photos of it? If so, please post them.

As for your 1936 Mauser Luger, there are good holsters out there for it, you have to search. You could try some of the dealer sites. You'll pay a bit more, but I'm sure you'll find one. Otherwise, search the forums for sale sections. I've found many good holsters there!

I agree with the above with one small exception, all positively identified (stamped Eagle/2) Luftwaffe holsters are black. That does NOT mean that all black holsters are Luftwaffe.

Hi Mike,
Yes, I have one. The holster on the left in the photos is a 1916 Adolph Schwartz & Co. pebble grain in it's original brown color.
I think it's standard practice in all the world's navies that when the men have nothing else to do, have them paint the ship (or dye their holsters). By 1916 they had something else to do.

Very Early Imperial Navy items are often found in brown. I have a beautiful Imperial Navy double magazine pouch in brown. A VERY small Crown M is stamped on the underside of the flap.

well, and I'd like to throw in that all Waa18 (all made during 1926, so likely for Simson) are ALL black, I have never seen a brown one.

Not to disagree, but WaA18 can be found on holsters made by A. Fischer (undated), C. Pose (dated 1926), as well as Gustav Reinehardt (dated 1922).
