An rather unusual suffix letter... <img BORDER="0" src='http://forum.rennlist.com/luger/pic.gif'>

This suffix letter doesn't match the examples in our technical information section...

It is from a piece being auctioned currently on Gunbroker (search for "rare" and you will find it.) The suffix letter on the lower frame under the barrel is identical...

Anyone care to comment on the seller's story about this suffix letter or perhaps have a good reference for this suffix example??

John are you talking about what looks like a NV in cursive? If so both my BW and S/42-36 have that mark on the frame just under the serial number.

That is a lower case "r" in the "alte schrift" or old style german script.

Look in Technical Section under suffix, then Suffix 2. Gortz sez it's a "w"

Not enough vertical strokes to make it a "w". Still think it is a "r" according to a very obscure reference I have in my files but can't reproduce to post.

This is definately a stylized W, and as far as I know, used only in 1938. Tom h

It was a great thread, But in this case I think Frank may have found the answer...

I had only looked at the 'n' and 'r' as a possibility... I would never have guessed a 'w'

See the example circled in red taken from Suffix2 of our technical page on markings...

What year(s) were the "w" guns? As I previusly stated I have a 36 and a 42 with that stamp. Being new to Lugers I am trying to learn. David

Hi David,

Jan Still's book, "Third Reich Lugers" has a fairly accurate chart which will show you the different letter blocks. There is some overlap on some, but for the most part it is real good information. "W" blocks were found in the 1937 S/42, 1939 42, and byf 41 models. -- And the "W" block was also used in the Mauser Banner commercial and police models, but the military and Banner "W"'s are two seperate, distinct blocks.
