Default Miniature Artillery Battery?

In my 'net wanderings I came across this on the use of miniature artillery as a training aide, at least the first article explores it.

Never heard of this before. Doesn't seem to have caught on..

Looks like it could have been the inspiration for the M79 "Thumper". This concept (sans the carriage) is also used for the golf ball adapters you can use with AR-15s: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/produ...ncher?a=502765

As a former Field Artillery ROTC student, and trained artillery forward observer, I am fascinated by the concept and the device itself. I wonder what ever happened to the device/simulators? I have never seen one before.

When I was in college, (back in the dark ages (mid 1960's)), we had a fully functional 105mm howitzer that we dragged out on the football field and ran simulated fire missions on our #1 Big 5 basketball rival (St. Joe's) on the other side of town... (Good thing that there wasn't any live 105 ammunition any closer to us than Fort Dix.

The instructors would provide the coordinates of where our simulated hits landed on their campus, and we would be required to calculate the elevation/windage/powder adjustments to place the subsequent projectile hits on the target. A whole lot more fun than going to Sociology 101.
