George, welcome to the forum.
I bought two Lugers years before I really studied. One a buffed artillery and the other a decent but mismatched 1940 42. So, first thing I suggest is buy books (smartly, not just cheap books ![]() Then choose anera you like Then, always buy as nice as you can.

Go to Simpsons, LTD, website and see what fires your imagination. Narrow it down a bit, then once you are focused, then start the hunt.

study assembly and disassembly books and youtube videos. there are a lot of helpful hints in them that will tell you what to look for and what's normal. once you're educated on the parts and function, then you'll be better prepared to deal with a salesman who may just want to make a buck.

Ah, here's another opportunity to pimp Gerard Henrotin's e-book, Luger Mechanical Function, first in a series of 5 excellent primers on different aspects of the Parabellum pistols. It will be just about the best $7.95 you may ever spend, as it does a thorough analysis of the pistol's mechanical systems. Learn more about different manufacturers, variations, accessories, etc. in his other Luger e-books. Find the link to his offerings on our main page, which contains an animation of the Luger firing sequence, taken from his e-book.
