Mike Reese Carbine

Merry Christmas all,
Many years ago, I had the pleasure of being invited to the home of Mike Reese. At the time he was working on his study of the American Eagle test Lugers. He had Lugers, books, documents etc. spread all over his living room floor. It was a very memorable visit.
Yesterday I picked up his book, "Luger Tips". I had not looked at the book in quite a while. Something caught my eye. Take a look at the carbine. Is this correct? A carbine sight and a rear toggle sight? Seems like the rear sight would have been eliminated on carbines. Any opinions?

A Luger Carbine should not have a rear sight.You are right on
and have a good eye.

Looks like another one made up to sell to unsuspecting buyers. There are many errors in that book. Bill

Doesn't Eric's carbine have both sights??? I'm sure I saw a pic of it...and commented on that...

Yes and I believe they came from the same source. If you look at Reese's book you will see many of his pictures came from one dealer. Bill

If any of you have been collecting Lugers as long as I have, you probably got a few Lugers out of the same source; expensive tuition.

The carbine on the cover of the Reese book may, in fact, be Eric's. I doubt Ralph would make the same mistake twice.

Not in any "dealer's" defense... but it could also be a carbine that had been repaired with a commonly available toggle part from a military Luger... long before the dealer ever saw the gun.

Of course, had I been the gunsmith, and I haven't done any public gun work in decades, I would have carefully machined off the original rear sight, and reblued the toggle just to be "correct"...

Toggle knogbs are flat, so not an old model. Probably a "1920" carbine, so all bets are off.
