Default Help with Luger

I am looking at possibly getting my first Luger. Saw this one for sale locally. It has 1940 and then 42 on the top. All numbers apear to match including mag. Any info or possible value would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I'd like to see better pictures of the finish as some photos look kind of "globby", like a dip re-finish, but most look OK. Numbers seem OK. What's he wanting for it? Holster, spare mag?

The photos look ok to me. It looks like a lot of oil on the gun. For a gun in this shape with original finish and a matching mag, $1,000 is a steal...

Agreed. A VERY attractive price if the finish is orig. If you were selling I'd guestimate $1700. dju

I just want to test myself in what I am learning here.. but would I be paranoid if I said that the wear does not look proper for it being 'use' wear?

I don't think you would be paranoid at all. I look at the frame rails just over the takedown lever and it just looks too good. But some photos look correct. I'd like to have this one in my hands.

A dip refinish should not look 'globby', it should look thin...If it looks like it was dipped in roofing tar, then it's not a dip blue...

My P-38 is a VoPo dip re-blue and looks very much like an original blue...I've heard some RC/VoPo refurbs look like they were tarred, but I've never seen one up close...

Just my $.02...

The dip finished ones that I have seen are a bit blacker and a tad bit thicker than standard salt bluing. Closer to paint actually. And the only part I'm questioning is the takedown lever on this gun, the rest either looks OK or the pictures are too poor to say otherwise. Like I said, I'd like to have it here in front of me, but given what we have here, I'll go ou t on the limb and accept it as original finish.
Certainly worth the $1000 asking price.

Remember you are not seeing any frame wear above the takedown because in the photo provided the toggle is back and the upper receiver retracted behind the sideplate. Also, the bolt has a correct plum color for this era Mauser pistol. The very light wear on the grips also match the balance of the pistol's condition.

Hey, there were some people that obtained pistols back then and just put them away. They don't all have to beat up.
