The recent post about Ralph Shattuck got me thinking about ALL the interesting old-time gunners I've met in the last handful of years. I met Ralph 2 years before his death when I found out that the "World Of Lugers" was only 10 miles from my front door. A chance phone call one Saturday morning got an invite for my wife and I to meet Ralph a few hours later at his home. He truly was a gentleman and very hospitable, he loved to tell us stories. If we had nothing else to do we would call Ralph on a Saturday AM to see if he wanted a little company so we could play with Lugers, usually he would. I will share one now. Someone posted that Ralph was a collector before he was a dealer, if so, he was collecting while still in grade school. As a teenager he developed a network of contacts while riding his bicycle around the neighborhoods. He used his seed money to purchase firearms that he was able to resell for profit (during the Great Depression era I think). As time went on, people would seek him out when they needed to sell. His volume steadily increased. He later developed a contact that would fly in to the local airport to meet him when he accumulated enough inventory. He would pedal his bike there all loaded down, must have been a sight. He still had the first Luger he ever owned, a nice looking 1920 Alphabet Comm.

I am not sure who you count as 'folks you've met" as being very famous or just met, so here is my listing
![]() 1. I have had dinner and visited Ralph at his house on 3 or 4 occasions when my job took me to Phoenix 2. I have seen Mr Buxton of P38 fame on several occasions, although I can't say I know him more than in passing 3. I have met Mr Kenyon at the Chattanooga NAPCA show several times, seems like a very nice man 4. I have met and been to Jan Still's house, very nice gentleman and my friend 5. I have purposely tried to meet as many forum members as possible and been to probably 15 or 20 of their houses and seen their collections, but I have met 40 or 50 members, possibly more and count probably 25 as friends. I would name them, but I know that I would leave many out.

Time warp to around 1972.
The most memorable collector I met was named Hockeborn. He lived in Auburn, NY, which was very close to where I lived at the time, Waterloo. A co-worker had given me his number; I called and introduced myself, and we set up a time to meet the next day. Mr. Hockeborn's collection was housed in a special area of his basement; some Lugers were in a display case and others were displayed on a wall system. Memories of this collection amaze me still, even though at that time I really didn't know what I was looking at! I definitely recall a full carbine setup, and a 9mm with its Erma .22 conversion kit. The mists of time do shroud the rest, but I'm thinking he had just about every significant example for what seemed like a very comprehensive collection. While pretty meaningless and unimpressive to others, this reminiscence serves me as a reminder that time is short and that you better do what you think you want to do, pretty much as soon after you think of it as you can. That was my last contact with Mr. Hockeborn and his Lugers, as life intervened, as it will. It was also the point at which I should have started collecting. Better late than never, eh? By the way, has anyone else on the forum heard of Mr. Hockeborn or his collection? Last edited by ithacaartist; 05-10-2011 at 02:13 PM. Reason: Added a question |
